On the blog today I’ll be sharing with y’all about our experience with the Melissa & Doug Catch & Count Fishing Game!I have always loved the Melissa and Doug brand because their products are generally made for making learning fun and this was no exception. What intrigued me about this particular game is that it helps children identify numbers and colors and all they know is that they are playing, which is always a plus!
The game contains 2 fishing poles, a spinning wheel that includes colors and numbers, a carrying case, as well as fish numbered 1-5. We kept the game play pretty simple so that my 2 year olds could understand what was going on. I laid the fish out on the floor and then let them take turns spinning the color/number wheel. When the spinner stopped they had to find the fish that matched and pick it up with their poles. The fish are magnetized and to pick one up you simply hold the fishing pole over the fish.
This game was fun and the kids enjoyed yelling out what number they had spun. I had a hard time getting them to stand up and fish for the fish because they had and easier time just sitting down and putting the magnet right on the fish. Eventually they got the hang of it.
The obvious pros of this game are that it helps kids identify numbers and colors, but one pro I didn’t realize before we played it was that it also helps hand/eye coordination. It was really neat to see how excited they got when they were able to “hook a fish” while standing up.
The only thing that was kind of frustrating about this particular game was that for the money I paid and the company that it is represented I was surprised that the fishing poles would NOT stay together. I finally had to tape them and this is only the second time it has been played with by the kids.
*a lot of fun and has educational qualities
*easy for little ones to play
*really helps with hand/eye coordination
*Some of the pieces won’t stay together (without a little help)
*Cost-I debated on whether or not to put this in the pro or con column, but I finally went with con because it is $20 and the pieces weren’t as high of quality as I would usually expect from Melissa & Doug products
I do really think that the Melissa & Doug Catch & Count Fishing Game is a fun game for kids. I personally waited until it went on sale and I was able to get it at a slightly cheaper price. All in all it was worth helping my kids learn in a fun new way and I can’t wait to get my hands on more Melissa and Doug products!
