Archives for November 2014
When I decided to start homeschooling the twins, I got lucky. I already had tons of arts and craft supplies. (Thanks art school!) But I do understand how overwhelming it can be to get started!
What do you need to have a good setup for school?
I’m no expert here, but I’m going to tell you what I like to have on hand for all types of play!
First things first, I have set up an area dedicated to school and play. This helps the kids have a location that they know to sit down at if they want to participate. It works very well for us because I can just tell them that it is time for school and they run to their little table. In addition to their table I made a space to show their artwork. They love to have it on display!
*Adhesives (hot glue gun, glue sticks, white glue, and/or tape)- For our projects I mainly use a glue stick and double sided tape. These are the easiest to use. I also put a glue stick in each child’s school pouch as well. If it is a more in depth project I whip out the big gun (glue gun that is!). Just remember to get some extra glue sticks! Also great to have is some painters tape or masking tape for keeping paper on the table while your little one paints!
*A spare roll of wrapping paper- This may seem odd, but this a useful thing to have on hand. It can be used for a large coloring page or can cover a table to protect it from paint or other messy activities.
*Play Doh- If you are like me, Play Doh scares you a little. But it is great for sensory play and building imagination! We like to get it out on occasion.
I also keep the kids a grab bag of supplies as well. These are just little supply bags with things they use most often so that we can quickly do an activity without having to dig through my baskets.
Another thing to consider is things you would normally throw out. Some things can be reused and are worth holding on to. Some items I would consider keeping instead of throwing out:
I hope this list helps you if you are considering homeschooling your child. It’s always good to have a few supplies on hand so that you can have fun any time without worrying about getting something from the store. If you have anything to add to the list, please feel free to share it in the comments!
This is the book that mine enjoy!
